Humboldt Squid

Seriously huge squid. Humboldt squids can grow up to 5 feet long and weigh as much as 100 pounds, making them some of the biggest squid in the world. They have powerful tentacles with suction cups lined with sharp teeth that help them grab fish and other prey.

The red devil nickname. These squid got their 'red devil' name because they turn a deep red color when they hunt or get angry, and they are known for being incredibly aggressive hunters. Unlike many other sea creatures, they will fearlessly attack prey much larger than themselves.

Eastern Pacific hunters. Humboldt squids live in the waters off the western coast of South America, particularly near Peru and Chile. They prefer deeper ocean waters but sometimes swim closer to the surface to hunt.

Super smart predators. These squid are among the most intelligent invertebrates in the ocean, with large brains and excellent vision. They hunt in coordinated groups called shoals, working together like a team to catch prey.

Come closer at night. Humboldt squids migrate up from deeper waters each night to feed, then swim back down during the day. This daily journey helps them find more food and avoid some of their predators.
