Surrounded by seven countries. Hungary is nestled in the heart of Central Europe with neighbors on every side: Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria. Being landlocked means it has no coastline, but it has something even better: the mighty Danube River flowing right through it.

Budapest is spectacular. Hungary's capital, Budapest, sits on the Danube River and is one of Europe's most beautiful cities. It's the country's heart for culture, business, and adventure, with grand architecture and thermal baths that have delighted visitors for centuries.

Unique language family. Hungarian is one of the very few European languages that doesn't belong to the Indo-European family of languages. This makes Hungarian special and quite different from the languages of its neighboring countries.

Home to many peoples. About 9.5 million people live in Hungary, mostly ethnic Hungarians called Magyars. The country also has a significant Romani population, adding to Hungary's cultural diversity.

Land of great plains. Hungary sits in the Carpathian Basin and is dominated by wide, flat lowland plains perfect for farming and grazing. These plains have made Hungary an important agricultural region for thousands of years.
