Cool Facts
Breaking Through Ice. Icebreaker ships have extremely thick, reinforced hulls that let them smash through frozen water that would trap or damage regular boats. They push the ice apart as they move forward, carving out a safe passage.
Helping Other Ships. Once an icebreaker creates an open channel through the ice, regular cargo ships and other vessels can follow safely behind it. This keeps trade routes and supply lines open during freezing winters.
Powerful Engines. Icebreakers need massive, mighty engines to ram through thick ice without getting stuck. These engines give them the strength to do work that would be impossible for ordinary ships.
Canal Helpers Too. Smaller icebreaking boats were once used on frozen canals in places like the United Kingdom to keep waterways open for transportation and trade during winter months.
