Cool Facts
Objects love staying put.. If something is sitting still, it will keep sitting still forever unless something pushes it. That's why you slide forward in a car when it suddenly stops, your body wants to keep moving the way it was going.
Moving things keep moving.. Once something is zooming along, it wants to keep zooming in the same direction at the same speed. A rolling ball doesn't slow down because it's lazy, it's actually trying to keep going the same way forever.
Newton figured it out.. A super smart scientist named Isaac Newton described this pattern as his First Law of Motion more than 300 years ago, and it's still how we understand the world today.
Mass makes it stronger.. Heavier objects have more inertia than lighter ones. It's much harder to push a bowling ball than a tennis ball because the bowling ball really, really wants to keep doing what it's doing.
It works everywhere.. Inertia doesn't just happen on Earth, it happens in space, underwater, and anywhere objects exist. It's one of the most important rules of how the universe works.
