The Cuillin dominates. These rocky mountains are the heart of Skye and create some of the most dramatic and beautiful mountain scenery anywhere in Scotland. Climbers and hikers love exploring their steep slopes.
Peninsulas radiate outward. Instead of being one simple shape, Skye has several peninsulas that stick out from the central mountainous area like fingers spreading from a hand.
Largest Inner Hebridean island. Skye is bigger than all the other major islands in the Inner Hebrides, which are a group of islands off Scotland's northwest coast.
Mystery in the name. Nobody is completely sure where the name 'Skye' comes from, though some people think 'Sgitheanach' might describe a winged shape that the island resembles.
