John James Audubon

Artist and scientist. Audubon combined his love of painting with his study of birds, creating incredibly detailed illustrations that showed exactly how birds looked, moved, and lived in nature.

Studied all North American birds. He spent years traveling across North America observing and drawing wild birds in their natural habitats, determined to create a complete record of every bird species on the continent.

Created a famous book. His masterpiece, The Birds of America (1827 to 1838), was a massive color-plate book with over 400 beautiful bird illustrations that people still admire today.

French-American explorer. Born in Haiti and raised in France, Audubon moved to America as a young man and spent decades traveling through wilderness and forests to find and paint birds nobody had carefully illustrated before.

Pioneer of bird science. Audubon's detailed observations and paintings helped scientists understand bird behavior, appearance, and habitat in ways that were impossible before his work.
