Jazz Poetry Pioneer. Langston Hughes invented a new style of writing poetry by combining the rhythms and feel of jazz music with words. He believed poetry should sound like real people talking and dancing, not stiff or fancy.

Born in Missouri. Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1902. He grew up in many different places and had lots of adventures before becoming a famous poet.

Harlem Renaissance Leader. During the 1920s and 1930s, Hughes led the Harlem Renaissance, a time when African American artists, musicians, and writers created amazing new art in New York City. He helped show the world the power and beauty of Black culture and voices.

Wrote Many Things. Hughes didn't just write poems, he also wrote novels, plays, and newspaper columns. His stories and characters brought African American life and experiences to readers everywhere.

Social Activist. Hughes used his writing to speak up for justice and equality. He believed that art and words could help change people's hearts and make the world fairer.
