Listens to everything. Judges hear all the witnesses and evidence that lawyers present, then carefully think about what each side says before making a decision.

Must be impartial. A judge cannot take sides with either person in the case, even if they have friends or family involved, because everyone deserves a fair chance.

Knows the law well. Judges study the law for many years so they can understand what the rules mean and apply them correctly to each case.

Makes the final call. After hearing everything, the judge issues a ruling that explains their decision and tells what will happen next.

Works in open court. Judges conduct trials where the public can watch, so everyone can see that the justice system is working fairly and honestly.
