Two main jobs. Knots either help you tie things down (like hitching a rope to a tree) or fasten two rope ends together (like joining two pieces of string). Some knots do both at the same time.

Four main types. Hitches hold ropes to objects, bends join two rope ends, loop knots create circles in the rope, and splices weave multiple strands together. Each type solves a different problem.

Stoppers and knobs. The simplest knot is just a stopper at the end of a rope, like a bulky knot at the tip that keeps the rope from sliding through a hole. It's practical and easy to make.

Ancient and timeless. People have used knots for thousands of years because they're so useful. Sailors, climbers, and craftspeople rely on them every single day.

Mathematical puzzles. Scientists study knots through something called knot theory, which explores how twisted rope behaves mathematically. It turns out knots hide surprising patterns and rules.
