A sacred pilgrimage. Kumbh Mela is a Hindu religious celebration where millions of people travel to four special cities in India to bathe in sacred rivers. They believe the water has been blessed with divine nectar from ancient stories.

Happens with Jupiter. The festival occurs every four or twelve years, timed with Jupiter's movement through the sky. This ancient connection between the stars and the celebration shows how astronomy and religion were connected in Hindu tradition.

Four holy cities. The pilgrimage rotates between four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. Each city sits on an important river where legend says drops of divine nectar once fell from the heavens.

Biggest gathering ever. About 660 million people attended the 2025 Kumbh Mela, making it the largest gathering of humans anywhere in the world. That is more than twice the population of the entire United States gathering in one place.

Lasts several months. Each Kumbh Mela runs for one to three months, with the busiest day being when the new moon appears in the sky. Pilgrims choose different days to visit based on their beliefs and the astrological calendar.
