Cool Facts
Improved light bulbs. Latimer invented a better way to make carbon filaments, the glowing parts inside electric light bulbs. His method made bulbs last longer and work more reliably, helping bring electric light to more homes and businesses.
Better railroad toilets. He created an improved toilet system for railroad cars that worked much better than older designs. This made train travel more comfortable and sanitary for everyone riding on trains.
Cooling the air. Latimer invented an evaporative air conditioner that could cool rooms down on hot days. This early cooling technology helped people stay comfortable before modern air conditioning existed.
Patent draftsman expert. Beyond inventing things himself, Latimer was skilled at drawing detailed technical plans called patent drawings. In 1884, he joined the Edison Electric Light Company to create these precise drawings that explained how inventions worked.
