Trained swimmers. Lifeguards learn advanced swimming skills so they can move quickly through water and reach people who need help, even in difficult conditions.
CPR and first aid. Every lifeguard trains in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid so they can help someone who stops breathing or gets seriously hurt.
Always watching. Lifeguards scan the water constantly from their chair or tower, looking for swimmers in trouble and ready to jump in at any moment.
Many water places. You'll find lifeguards at swimming pools, beaches, water parks, lakes, and rivers, wherever people gather to have fun in the water.
Emergency helpers. In some communities, lifeguards are part of the emergency services system and might be the first trained responders to help people in distress.
