A marvel of engineering. The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also called the Pharos, was built over 2,000 years ago in Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Ptolemy II. It stood at least 330 feet tall, making it one of the world's tallest human-made structures at that time.

Guided ancient ships. Sailors used the lighthouse's bright light to find their way safely into Alexandria's harbor, the busiest port in Egypt. The light could be seen from incredibly far away across the Mediterranean Sea.

One of Seven Wonders. The Lighthouse of Alexandria was so impressive that it became one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, joining famous structures like the Great Pyramid and the Hanging Gardens.

Built with three tiers. The lighthouse had a thick, strong tower made of white stone with a special mirror or fire system at the top to produce its brilliant guiding light for ships at sea.
