Cone-shaped shells. Limpets have special dish-shaped shells that look like tiny helmets or cones. This shape helps water flow over them and keeps them safe from crashing waves.

Super strong foot. Under their shell, limpets have a powerful muscular foot that works like a suction cup. They can grip rocks so tightly that you'd need serious effort to pry one off.

Ocean rock dwellers. Limpets live on rocks in the ocean, where they munch on algae and seaweed. They come from the same family as other snails, called gastropods.

Distant cousins. Even though they look similar, limpets come from different branches of the snail family tree. Scientists call them a polyphyletic group because they evolved separately but ended up with the same cone shape.
