Massive temple complex. Luxor Temple is a colossal building made of stone that was constructed around 1400 BCE in ancient Egypt. It sits on the east bank of the Nile River in the city of Luxor and was one of the most important temples of its time.

Sacred southern sanctuary. The ancient Egyptians called it ipet resyt, which means 'the southern sanctuary.' This name tells us that the temple was a sacred place where people came to worship and perform religious ceremonies.

Honored the gods. This temple was built to celebrate and honor Egyptian gods, and it was a place where priests performed rituals and made offerings. People believed the gods lived in the temple and would help protect their kingdom.

Architectural wonder. The temple features enormous stone columns, towering walls covered in hieroglyphics, and grand courtyards that show incredible skill in building. The ancient workers moved massive stone blocks into place without modern machines, which is amazing to imagine.

One of two main temples. Luxor Temple was one of the two primary temples on the east bank of the Nile, with the other being the massive Karnak Temple nearby. Together, these temples showed the wealth and power of ancient Egypt.
