Longest in Canada. The Mackenzie River, along with its connected rivers like the Peace and Slave, makes up Canada's longest river system. It stretches across the country like a giant watery highway through some of the wildest places on Earth.

Arctic flows. The Mackenzie River eventually empties into the Arctic Ocean in the far north. This makes it one of the few major rivers that carries fresh water all the way to the Arctic, which is super important for the ecosystem up there.

Boreal forest home. The river winds through the Canadian boreal forest and tundra, two of the most remote landscapes in North America. These frozen regions are home to moose, beavers, and indigenous communities who have lived along the river for thousands of years.

Huge drainage basin. The Mackenzie system drains water from an enormous area of Canada, second only to the Mississippi River's drainage basin in all of North America. That means it collects water from hundreds of tributaries and smaller rivers across millions of square kilometers.
