Fortune-telling toy. The Magic 8 Ball is a plastic sphere that looks like a giant billiard ball used to answer yes-or-no questions. You ask it a question, flip it over, and an answer mysteriously appears in a window on the bottom.

Hidden 20-sided die. Inside the ball is a 20-sided die with different answers written on each face, all floating in dark blue rubbing alcohol. When you flip the ball, the die tumbles around randomly and one answer floats up to show in the window.

Invented in 1946. Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman created the Magic 8 Ball and it became so popular that the toy company Mattel started making it. It's been a fun party trick and decision-making tool for over 75 years.

Answers vary. The Magic 8 Ball has 20 different possible answers, including positive ones like 'Yes, definitely' and 'It is certain,' negative ones like 'Don't count on it,' and uncertain ones like 'Reply hazy, try again.' No answer is more likely than any other since it's all random.

Random chance. The ball works because when you flip it, the die tumbles unpredictably in the liquid, making it impossible to control which answer appears. This randomness makes people feel like they're getting a real decision from the universe, even though it's just chance.
