Invisible magnetic bubble. Earth's magnetosphere is a huge region of space wrapped around our planet where its magnetic field is powerful enough to affect charged particles. Think of it like an invisible force field that extends thousands of miles into space.

Blocks solar wind. The Sun constantly shoots out charged particles called solar wind, but Earth's magnetosphere acts like a shield and deflects most of them away. Without this protection, those particles could strip away our atmosphere and make life impossible.

Shaped by solar wind. The solar wind pushes on the magnetosphere so hard that it squashes one side (facing the Sun) and stretches the other side into a long tail that points away from the Sun, like wind blowing a flag.

Creates auroras. When some charged particles get trapped in the magnetosphere near Earth's poles, they crash into our atmosphere and create the beautiful glowing light show called the aurora borealis or northern lights.

Generated inside Earth. Earth's magnetosphere exists because our planet's core is made of hot, swirling liquid iron that acts like a giant electromagnet, constantly creating magnetic fields that reach far into space.
