Dying star's gift. When a red giant star reaches the end of its life, it sheds its outer layers of gas into space. This creates a beautiful, glowing shell of gas and light that can shine for thousands of years.
Gas shell expanding. The name 'planetary nebula' is a bit tricky because it has nothing to do with planets. Early astronomers thought these objects looked like planets through their telescopes, so the name stuck even though it's misleading.
Ionized and glowing. The gas in a planetary nebula is so hot that it becomes ionized, meaning its electrons get knocked loose from their atoms. This ionization makes the gas glow brightly in different colors like blue, green, and red.
Many shapes and sizes. Planetary nebulae come in all sorts of amazing shapes, from perfect rings and hourglasses to fuzzy blobs and complex butterfly-like patterns. Each one is unique and beautiful to see through telescopes.
Finding them in space. Thousands of planetary nebulae exist in our galaxy, and new ones are being discovered all the time. The most famous one is the Ring Nebula, which looks like a cosmic doughnut in the sky.
