Deeper than Everest. The Mariana Trench's deepest point, called the Challenger Deep, is so far down that it's more than 2 kilometers deeper than Mount Everest is tall. If you put the world's highest mountain upside down at the bottom, its peak wouldn't even come close to the top.

Measuring the gap. The trench is crescent-shaped and stretches about 2,550 kilometers long and 69 kilometers wide, making it a massive valley carved into the ocean floor near the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean.

Record breaking depth. Scientists have measured the deepest spot at 10,935 meters down, which is almost 11 kilometers straight down from the surface. The pressure there is so intense that almost no light or life can survive.

Located in the Pacific. You'll find this incredible trench about 200 kilometers east of the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean, one of the most remote places on Earth.
