Trading Gathering Spots. A marketplace is any place where people meet up regularly to buy and sell things like food, animals, clothes, and crafts. These spots have been important to communities for thousands of years.

Names Around the World. Different countries call their markets by different names. A souk in the Middle East, a bazaar in Asia, a mercado in Spanish-speaking places, a tianguis in Mexico, and a palengke in the Philippines are all types of marketplaces.

When Markets Happen. Some markets are open every single day, while others happen just once a week or only on special festival days. It all depends on the community and how many shoppers they expect.

Indoor or Outdoor. Marketplaces can be outside in squares, inside in covered halls, or even online on the internet. The style depends on the local weather, how many people live nearby, and what the culture values.

Unique to Each Place. Each marketplace is shaped by its neighborhood's population, culture, and geography. A market in a desert town looks totally different from one near the ocean or in a busy city.
