Fourth-largest city. Marrakesh is home to hundreds of thousands of people and is one of Morocco's most important cities alongside Fez, Meknes, and Rabat.

Mountain neighbor. The city sits on the western side of the Atlas Mountains, which provide a dramatic snowy backdrop visible from the city during winter.

Imperial heritage. Marrakesh is one of only four imperial cities in Morocco, meaning it was once a royal capital where sultans ruled the kingdom.

Medina markets. The old walled city (called the medina) is packed with souks, or traditional markets, where vendors sell spices, textiles, leather goods, and handicrafts.

Cultural crossroads. For centuries, Marrakesh has been where Berber, Arab, and African traders met, mixing different cultures and traditions together.
