Olympic Gold Medalist. Mary Lou Retton won the individual all-around gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, which meant she was the best female gymnast overall at those Games.

Multiple Medals. At those same Olympics, she also earned two silver medals and two bronze medals, showing she was excellent at many different gymnastics events.

Sportswoman of the Year. Her amazing performances at the 1984 Olympics were so impressive that Sports Illustrated magazine named her their Sportswoman of the Year.

Retired Champion. Mary Lou Retton is now retired from gymnastics competition, but she remains one of the most celebrated gymnasts in American history.
