Arctic explorer. Matthew Henson traveled on seven separate voyages to the Arctic Ocean with explorer Robert Peary over nearly 23 years, spending about 18 of those years on expeditions together.

Reached the North Pole. On April 6, 1909, Henson's team claimed to have reached the geographic North Pole, which is the northernmost point on Earth. Henson later said he was the first one in the group to actually reach it.

Extreme conditions. Exploring the Arctic means surviving some of the coldest, harshest conditions on our planet, where temperatures drop far below freezing and the landscape is covered in endless ice and snow.

Perseverance paid off. Henson's dedication to these dangerous expeditions showed incredible courage and determination, making him one of the most important explorers in history despite facing many obstacles.
