Springtime symbol. Maypoles are set up during spring festivals, especially around May Day on May 1st, to celebrate the arrival of warm weather and new growth after winter.

Ribbon weaving dance. Dancers hold the ends of long ribbons attached to the top of the pole and skip and spin around it, creating a beautiful woven pattern that gets tighter as they dance.

Made from wood. A maypole is simply a tall wooden pole, often decorated with flowers, greenery, or painted stripes, that can be set up in a town square or village green for the celebration.

European tradition. Maypoles have been part of springtime festivals in countries like England, Germany, Sweden, and many other European nations for hundreds of years.

Community gathering. The maypole dance brings whole villages together, with people of all ages participating or watching, making it a fun way for communities to celebrate the season together.
