A standard for comparing. A unit of measurement is like a universal ruler that everyone agrees on. When we say something is 10 metres long, we all know exactly what that means because a metre is a fixed, agreed-upon length.

Same thing, different ways. We measure all kinds of things using units, like length in metres, weight in kilograms, and temperature in degrees. Each type of thing we measure needs its own kind of unit.

Adopted by everyone. Units of measurement are officially chosen and adopted by countries and scientists so that people around the world can understand each other. This makes it possible to build things, do experiments, and trade goods with confidence.

Makes math easy. Once you have a unit, you can express any amount as a multiple of it. If a metre is your unit and something is 10 times as long, you just say it is 10 metres.

Definitions matter. Each unit has a precise, predetermined definition that never changes. This means a metre today is exactly the same length as a metre was 100 years ago.
