The Middle Ages

Castles and kingdoms. During the Middle Ages, powerful lords built massive stone castles to protect their lands and families. These castles became the centers of medieval life, where nobles ruled over the people who lived and worked nearby.

Knights and armor. Brave warriors called knights wore heavy suits of metal armor and fought on horseback for their lords. They followed a code of honor called chivalry that taught them to be loyal, courageous, and fair.

Monks and learning. Religious monks preserved knowledge by carefully copying books by hand in monasteries, since printing hadn't been invented yet. They kept learning alive through the Middle Ages and created beautiful decorated manuscripts.

Farming the land. Most people during the Middle Ages were peasants who farmed the soil for nobles and the church. They lived hard lives, but their crops fed everyone in medieval society.

Trade and towns. As the Middle Ages went on, towns grew bigger and merchants traveled farther to buy and sell goods like spices, cloth, and metals across Europe and beyond.
