Catches sound waves. A microphone uses special materials inside that vibrate when sound hits them, kind of like how your eardrum works. Those vibrations get turned into tiny electrical signals that travel through wires.
Electrical transformation. The microphone is a transducer, which is a fancy word for a device that changes one type of energy (sound) into another type (electricity). This electrical signal can then be recorded, broadcast, or sent to another person.
Everywhere you go. Microphones are hidden inside your phone, hearing aids, and computers. They let you record videos, make phone calls, and talk to voice assistants like Siri or Alexa.
Broadcasting and recording. Singers use microphones in concert halls and studios, news reporters use them for interviews, and podcasters use them to share their voices with the world. Without microphones, we wouldn't be able to record or share audio.
Different types exist. There are many kinds of microphones designed for different jobs. Some are tiny and built into devices, while others are big and stand on stages to capture powerful voices and instruments.
