Digital to Analog. Modems work like translators, converting the 1s and 0s that computers use into wave-like signals that can travel through telephone wires or radio waves. Then they translate those waves back into digital information on the receiving end.
Modulation Magic. The name modem comes from two words: modulate (changing a signal) and demodulate (reading it back). When your modem sends data, it modulates it into waves, and when it receives data, it demodulates those waves back into computer language.
Phone Line Pioneer. Early modems worked over regular telephone lines, turning your voice phone into an internet connection. This is why you'd hear those weird beeping and buzzing sounds when connecting to the internet in the 1990s.
