Cool Facts
Robots do the work. Automatic milking systems use agricultural robots to milk dairy cows without any people having to do it. These systems started being sold to farms in the early 1990s.
Cows choose their time. Cows can walk up to the milking robot whenever they feel ready, so it's sometimes called a voluntary milking system. The robot uses computers to recognize each cow and milk it properly.
Smart health checks. These systems don't just milk cows, they also watch for signs of sickness or problems with each animal. Farmers can use special software to track their whole herd's health from a computer.
Milking all day long. Because robots work 24 hours a day, cows can be milked multiple times whenever they need it, not just once or twice a day like with regular milking.
