The Ming Dynasty

Built the Forbidden City. The Ming emperors constructed the magnificent Forbidden City in Beijing, a palace complex so vast it has nearly 1,000 rooms. It took about 14 years to build and became the home of Chinese emperors for almost 500 years.

Expanded the Great Wall. The Ming dynasty rebuilt and reinforced much of the Great Wall of China that we see today. They added watchtowers and made it stronger to protect against invasions from the north.

Last Han dynasty. The Ming were the final imperial dynasty ruled by the Han people, who are the largest ethnic group in China. They ruled for 276 years, from 1368 to 1644.

Sponsored great voyages. Ming emperors sent out massive treasure ships led by explorer Zheng He that traveled across the Indian Ocean. These voyages showed off China's power and brought back exotic goods and knowledge from distant lands.

Brilliant art and ceramics. The Ming period is famous for beautiful blue and white porcelain, stunning paintings, and intricate silk work. Collectors today still treasure Ming vases and ceramics because they're so beautiful and well-made.
