Quakes: When Planets Shake

Quakes shake planets. A quake is when the surface of a planet, moon, or star suddenly shakes. This shaking happens because energy gets released all at once, kind of like when you pluck a guitar string really hard.

Energy travels as waves. The energy from a quake spreads out as seismic waves, which are ripples that move through rock and soil. These waves are what cause the ground to shake and roll under your feet.

Quakes happen everywhere. Quakes don't just happen on Earth. They also happen on the Moon (moonquakes), Mars (marsquakes), Venus (venusquakes), and even on stars (starquakes). Each planet and moon can have its own kind of shaking.

Sometimes very powerful. A quake can be so violent and strong that it changes the landscape, breaks buildings, and causes huge damage. But most quakes are small and gentle, and people barely notice them.

All quakes are similar. Scientists call all these shaking events 'earthquakes' as a general term, even when they happen on other worlds. This helps us study how different planets and moons work inside.
