Cool Facts
Traits that help win.. When animals have features that make them better at surviving, like a giraffe's long neck to reach high leaves, they're more likely to have babies and pass those helpful traits on to their kids.
Not fair, but nature's way.. Different animals in the same family are born with slightly different bodies and abilities. The ones best suited to their home survive longer and have more offspring, slowly changing what the whole population looks like over many generations.
Super slow and invisible.. Natural selection takes thousands or millions of years to reshape a species. You won't see it happen in your lifetime, but if you compare fossils from long ago to animals living today, the changes are amazing.
Darwin's big idea.. A naturalist named Charles Darwin discovered that nature picks winners in a different way than humans do. When humans breed dogs or cows on purpose, that's artificial selection, but when nature does it through survival, that's natural selection.
No plan or purpose.. Natural selection isn't trying to make animals better or smarter. It's just that animals with handy traits stick around longer and have more babies, so those useful traits spread through families over time.
