Glowing giant floats. The festival features enormous illuminated floats called nebuta that are shaped like samurai warriors, historical figures, and characters from Japanese legends. These incredible creations light up the summer night as they parade through the city.

Happens every August. The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri takes place in early August in Aomori, Japan, and draws more visitors than any other nebuta festival in the whole country.

Massive celebration. It's one of the three biggest festivals in the Tohoku region of Japan and attracts crowds of tourists from around the world who come to see the amazing light show.

Protected treasure. The festival is so important to Japanese culture that it was officially named an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1980, meaning the government protects and preserves it.

Famous sounds too. In 1996, the Ministry of the Environment recognized the festival as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan because the music, drums, and cheers create a special auditory experience.
