Five boroughs in one race. The NYC Marathon is unique because it winds through all five of New York City's neighborhoods, Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan, making it one of the most geographically diverse marathons in the world.

Enormously popular event. Over 200,000 people apply to run the NYC Marathon each year, but only about 59,000 get to actually participate, making it harder to get into than many colleges.

Among the very best. The NYC Marathon ranks alongside the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon as one of the most important long-distance running events in the United States.

Global recognition. It's officially one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, a group of the six most prestigious marathons on the planet that elite runners compete in.
