A masterpiece of loneliness. Nighthawks shows four people in a diner late at night, but nobody is talking or looking at each other. Even though they're in the same room, each person seems lost in their own thoughts.

Lit from within. The bright light flooding out from the diner's large glass window makes the dark, empty street outside look even more dark and quiet. It's like the diner is an island of light in the night.

A slice of city life. Edward Hopper painted this in 1942 and captured something true about big cities, where there are always a few people awake in the middle of the night, even when the rest of the world is sleeping.

Four strangers connected. The painting shows a server behind the counter, a couple sitting together, and a lone man sitting by himself. You can almost feel the silence between them.

Oil on canvas. Hopper used oil paint on canvas to create rich colors and realistic details, making the scene feel real enough to step into.
