Nile Perch

Called the water elephant. In the Hausa language of West Africa, the Nile perch is called giwan ruwa, which means 'water elephant' because of its enormous size and power in the water.

Lives across Africa. These giant fish are found in many African river systems and lakes, including the Nile River, Congo River, Lake Chad, and Lake Victoria, spreading across the Afrotropical realm.

Feeds millions of people. The Nile perch is super important for food and the economy in East Africa, providing protein and income for countless communities who depend on fishing.

Many names, one fish. People across Africa call this fish different names in their own languages: Victoria perch, sangara in Tanzania, and capitaine in French-speaking countries, showing how widely known it is.

Freshwater champion. Unlike most fish, the Nile perch can handle both pure freshwater rivers and even slightly salty water, making it super adaptable to different habitats.
