Cool Facts
Canada's Biggest Territory. Nunavut is the largest territory in Canada and sits at the very top of the country in the Arctic. It's so enormous that you could fit many countries inside it.
Made for the Inuit. When Nunavut was created in 1999, it became a special place where the Inuit people could run their own government and make decisions for their communities. This was a historic moment because the Inuit finally had control over their ancestral lands.
Brand New Territory. Nunavut only became its own territory in 1999, making it the newest part of Canada. Before that, it was part of the Northwest Territories for many years.
Frozen and Remote. Nunavut is one of the coldest places in Canada, covered in snow and ice for most of the year. Many parts of it are so far north that the sun barely sets in summer and barely rises in winter.
Spread Out Population. Nunavut has very few people spread across its huge land, so communities are small and far apart. Most people living there are Inuit who have adapted to life in the Arctic for thousands of years.
