Pigments plus oil. Oil painters mix colored powders called pigments with drying oils to create their paints. This special mixture lets artists blend colors smoothly and layer them to build up incredible depth and detail.

Super rich colors. Oil paints create richer and denser colors than many other painting methods. They can show a huge range from the darkest darks to the brightest lights, giving paintings an amazing glow and dimension.

Time to dry. Oil paints dry slowly, which is actually wonderful for artists. They have plenty of time to blend, fix mistakes, and blend colors together before the paint hardens.

Built in layers. Artists can paint many layers of oil on top of each other, creating images with stunning depth. They might paint a dark background first, then add lighter details on top, building the picture up carefully.

Centuries of masterpieces. Oil painting has been the favorite method of great artists for hundreds of years, used on canvas, wood panels, and even copper. Many of the world's most famous paintings were created using this classic technique.
