Religious sanctuary. Olympia was one of ancient Greece's most important holy places, where people came to honor the gods and watch athletic competitions. It was sacred to all Greek city-states, not just one kingdom.

Games every four years. The ancient Olympic Games happened at Olympia once every four years from around 776 BC until 393 AD. Athletes from across Greece traveled there to compete in running, wrestling, jumping, and throwing events.

Over a thousand years. The Olympic Games at Olympia lasted for more than 1,200 years, making it one of the longest-running sports tradition in human history. Winners received olive wreaths as prizes, not gold medals.

Games restored recently. The ancient Olympic Games stopped after the Roman Empire declined, but they came back in 1894 as the modern Olympic Games. This happened to celebrate the ancient Greek ideal of peaceful competition between nations.

Ruins remain today. Today you can visit Olympia and see the archaeological remains of temples, stadiums, and statues from ancient times. It helps us understand how important sports and religion were to the ancient Greeks.
