Sailing at the Summer Olympics

Ancient Olympic Sport. Sailing has been part of the Summer Olympics since the very first modern games in Athens, Greece, in 1896. It is one of the oldest sports still competed in the Olympics today.

Weather Canceled First Race. The first Olympic sailing races were supposed to happen in 1896, but terrible weather and rough seas forced organizers to cancel them. It was a disappointing start for this exciting sport.

Women Joined In Early. Even way back in 1900, women were sailing in Olympic races alongside men. In 1988, the first women-only sailing events were added, and by 2016, mixed teams of men and women started competing together.

Racing Against Others. Most Olympic sailing competitions use a fleet race format, where many boats race at the same time and the fastest boat wins. Some Olympic events have also used match racing, where just two boats compete directly against each other.

Many Different Boats. Over the years, the Olympics have featured many different classes, or types, of sailboats in competition. The boats have changed over time to keep the sport exciting and fair for all sailors.
