Cool Facts
Sliced rings of onion. Onion rings start as a cross-section slice from an onion, which naturally separates into rings. This ring shape is perfect for holding onto crispy coating.
Dipped in batter. The onion rings get dunked into a wet batter, which is a mixture of flour, eggs, and milk. This coating sticks to the onion and creates the golden-brown crust when fried.
Deep fried until crispy. The battered rings go into hot oil and cook until they turn golden and crunchy on the outside. The heat makes the batter puff up and crisp while keeping the onion tender inside.
Served as a side dish. Onion rings usually come alongside hamburgers, hot dogs, or other fried foods at restaurants and diners. But they're so delicious that lots of people eat them all by themselves!
Onion paste version. Some cooks make a fancier version using onion paste mixed with other ingredients instead of sliced rings. This creates a different texture but the same delicious fried onion flavor.
