Your brain fills in gaps. When you see a stick half underwater that looks bent, or lines that seem different lengths when they're actually the same, your brain is making quick guesses about what it's seeing. These guesses usually help you understand the world, but sometimes they get fooled.
Afterimages are real. Stare at a bright light, then look away, and you'll see a ghostly image floating in front of you. That's a physiological illusion called an afterimage, and it happens because your eye's light-sensing cells stay a little bit 'turned on' even after the light is gone.
Motion keeps on going. If you watch a waterfall for a while and then look at the rocks beside it, the rocks seem to move upward. This motion aftereffect happens because your brain's movement detectors get tired, like your muscles do after exercise.
Three main types exist. Physical illusions happen with light and objects in the real world, physiological ones happen in your eyes and nerves, and cognitive ones happen when your brain makes wrong guesses about what it sees. Each type tricks you in different ways.
Same lines, different lengths. In the famous Müller-Lyer illusion, two lines of equal length look different because of the arrows at their ends. Your brain unconsciously judges length by comparing the lines to their surroundings, which is usually smart but sometimes leads you astray.
