Tropical tree origin. Papayas grow on tall plants that look like trees but are actually herbs, originally from Central America and southern Mexico before spreading around the world.

Orange flesh inside. The fruit has soft, creamy orange or yellow flesh inside with lots of tiny black seeds that you can eat or spit out.

Special enzyme power. Papayas contain an enzyme called papain that helps break down proteins, which is why some people use papaya to tenderize meat or help with digestion.

Fast grower. Papaya plants grow incredibly quickly and can produce fruit within just 6 to 9 months, making them one of the speediest fruit plants around.

Many color varieties. Papayas come in different sizes and colors, from small sweet varieties to larger ones, with skin that can be yellow, orange, or green depending on ripeness.
