Bumpy purple skin. Passion fruit has a thick, wrinkled skin that's either dark purple or golden yellow when ripe. The bumpy texture might look odd, but it means the fruit is perfectly ready to eat.

Grows on vines. Passion fruit plants are vines that need to climb up trellises or supports to grow. They love warm, tropical weather and produce beautiful, exotic flowers before the fruit appears.

Native to South America. Passion fruit comes from southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, where it still grows wild in many places. Today, people grow it all around the world in warm climates.

Seedy and juicy. Inside the tough skin is a soft, juicy interior completely filled with crunchy seeds. You can scoop out the insides with a spoon and eat both the seeds and the tangy-sweet juice together.

A special berry type. Botanists call passion fruit a pepo, which is a fancy word for a berry with a thick, tough skin like a pumpkin. It's one of the few fruits that belongs to this unusual category.
