Cool Facts
Pasta pockets. Ravioli are pieces of thin pasta dough folded around a filling to create little sealed bundles. The filling can be cheese, meat, vegetables, or other ingredients depending on what region or cook prepares them.
Usually square shaped. Most ravioli are cut into squares, which makes them easy to pack and serve. However, cooks also make them in circles, half-moons (called mezzelune), and other creative shapes.
Born in Italy. Ravioli originated in Italy as a traditional food that Italian families have been making for centuries. Today it's famous around the world, but it's still considered a classic Italian dish.
Served in liquid. Ravioli are usually cooked in boiling water like other pasta and then served either in a savory broth or covered with sauce. The sauce or broth soaks into the pasta and flavors the filling inside.
