A Second Chance. When the other team commits a serious foul, you get to take a penalty shot with almost no defenders in your way. It's like the game is giving you a gift because someone else played unfairly.

Different in Each Sport. Soccer penalty kicks happen from a special spot on the field, but hockey penalty shots let the player skate toward the goalie from center ice. Each sport has its own rules for exactly how to take the shot.

No Time Pressure. The clock stops during a penalty shot, so there's no rush. The player taking it can take a breath and focus completely on scoring, which makes it even scarier for the goalie defending.

Specific Distances. In soccer, penalty kicks are taken from 12 yards away. In hockey, the player starts at center ice and skates toward the goal. Every sport marks exactly where you must shoot from.
