Solar panels of nature. Leaves are like tiny solar panels on plants that capture sunlight and turn it into food. This process is called photosynthesis, and it's how plants get the energy they need to grow and live.

Green is the clue. Most leaves are green because they contain a special chemical called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what actually catches the sunlight and uses it to make food from water and air.

Top and bottom matter. The top and bottom of a leaf are quite different. The top side usually has more structures to catch sunlight, while the bottom has tiny holes called stomata that let air move in and out.

Painted leaves exist. Some leaves have white or lighter-colored patches called variegated leaves. These beautiful patterns happen when parts of the leaf don't have as much chlorophyll, creating cool striped or spotted designs.

Leaves make shoots grow. Leaves are part of a plant's shoot system, which includes the stem, flower, and fruit too. Together, all these parts work as a team to keep the plant healthy and thriving.
