A harvest celebration. Pongal is a multi-day festival where Tamil families celebrate the rice harvest and give thanks for the crops that feed them. It marks the start of the new year in the Tamil calendar.

Four special days. The festival has four different days, each with its own name and activities: Bhogi, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal. Each day celebrates different aspects of the harvest and family life.

Cooking special rice. On Thai Pongal, families cook a special pot of rice called Pongal in a new clay pot as an offering of thanks. The name of the festival actually comes from this beloved rice dish.

January celebration. Pongal falls on January 14 or 15 each year, marking the beginning of the month of Thai in the Tamil calendar. It happens at the same time as other harvest festivals celebrated across India.

Family traditions. During Pongal, families decorate their homes, wear new clothes, share meals together, and spend time celebrating with loved ones. It's a time of joy, togetherness, and thanksgiving.
