Populus (Poplars and Aspens)

25 to 30 species. Populus is a big family of trees with many different types, including poplars, aspens, and cottonwoods. Each species has its own look and personality.

Quivering leaves. Aspen leaves have flat stems that let them flutter and shake with even the tiniest breeze, making a soft whispering sound. This is why some people call them 'quaking aspens.'

Super fast growers. Populus trees are champion sprinters in the plant world, shooting up tall and wide much faster than most other trees. This makes them popular for quickly filling empty spaces in forests and landscapes.

Northern stars. These trees live across the Northern Hemisphere, from North America to Europe to Asia. They love cool climates and often grow near rivers and in valleys.

Fluffy seeds. Populus trees produce cottony fluff that drifts through the air carrying seeds far and wide. This fluffy stuff comes from the female trees and is how the species spreads.
